The following instructions may be helpful when preparing for your upcoming surgery. Do not hesitate to call if you have any last minute questions.

If prescribed, take your antibiotic according to the directions.

It may be important to stop taking Aspirin and/or non-steroidal medications, such as Motrin and Advil, 5 days prior to your surgery. If you are taking Coumadin or another blood thinner, remember to stop taking these medications only as directed by your MD. If you take antibiotic premed, please take it as directed before your surgery. If you have been prescribed an antibiotic for your surgery please ensure that you start taking it before surgery as directed.

What to wear/bring

We keep the office cool, so dress warmly. Wear loose fitting, comfortable clothes (preferably not white). Wear comfortable, close-toed shoes (no sandals). You may bring your iPod or MP3 player. You may also wish to bring slippers and a blanket, particularly if you are seeing us for sedation.

De-stress

Stress increases cortisol levels in the body, impacting our immune system and body’s ability to heal and recover. Take action to keep yourself relaxed leading up to and after your appointment

  • Plan to show up early.
  • Get a good night seep.
  • Do a relaxing activity the night or morning before your appointment: yoga, meditation, walking, or listening to relaxing music.
  • Make sure the last meal before surgery is nutritious and filling. Your body needs extra energy to recover.
  • Avoid alcohol, smoking, and non-prescription drugs leading up to your appointment
  • Book a ride home with a family member or friend for after your appointment
  • Plan for minimal activity for the rest of the day: Sleep, read or catch up on your favourite TV show.

Before your surgery, stock your kitchen with an abundance of healthy nutritious food. The food we eat becomes the building blocks of our cells and tissues. In this way, what we eat influences how quickly and efficiently our body can heal. Focus on nutritious, soft foods. Consider some of the following choices:

  • Soft fruits (Bananas)
  • Yogurt
  • Well cooked pasta or rice
  • Hummus, guacamole and other dips
  • Eggs
  • Fish
  • Cottage cheese
  • Simple soups & broths
  • Rice Pudding
  • Apple sauce
  • Oatmeal
  • Couscous
  • Potatoes/sweet potato
  • Protein shakes
  • Smoothies
  • Ice cream
  • Avocado
  • Soft cheese
  • Tofu
  • Nut butters
  • Steamed/roasted vegetables
  • Honey
