Frequently Asked Questions

Will It Hurt?

We will be as gentle as possible. The periodontal exam can be completed with little or no discomfort.

Do I Need X-Rays?

We will need current periodontal x-rays to help with a thorough clinical exam and establishing a diagnosis. If your referring dentist has taken x-rays, they will be forwarded to us.

Are Dental X-Rays Safe?

Dental x-rays use very low doses of radiation, making the risks very small. Plus we also use digital x-rays, which requires 4 times less radiation. A full mouth series of x-rays (twenty small, non-digital films) have radiation levels equivalent to 2-3 days of naturally occurring radiation from the sun or a 4-hour flight on an airplane.

What Will It Cost?

Since all patients are different, an exam must be completed to establish your treatment plan and any associated fees. The fee for periodontal treatment can vary considerably depending on the type of problem, and the complexity and length of treatment. However, an approximate fee can usually be determined at the first visit. Be assured, we use the current periodontal fee guide established by the Ontario Dental Association.

Will My Insurance Cover The Cost?

Dental insurance plans often cover periodontal treatment, however each plan is different. Please bring all medical and dental benefit information and cards to your examination appointment.

If I Have Gum Disease, Will I Need Surgery?

Not everyone needs periodontal (gum) surgery. If treated early, it can be managed with a non-surgical hygiene regime and maintenance. We make recommendations based on your individual situation. The philosophy of our practice is to treat as conservatively as possible.

But I'm nervous having any dental treatment!

Many patients are nervous and afraid. For this reason our office is centered on patient comfort and relaxation. We can discuss options that include various levels of sedation from relaxation, twilight, to complete sleep.

Can My Teeth Be Saved?

The recent advances in periodontal treatment allow us to successfully treat most teeth.

When Will I Go Back To My General Dentist?

We will work closely together with your dentist. If you don’t have a general dentist we will be happy to help you find one. Your dentist is responsible for any crowns, restorations, or prosthetics that are a part of your treatment plan.

What If I Don’t Have Gum Treatment?

Periodontal disease is characterized by a progressive, painless infection. If any treatment is delayed the extent of bone loss may become so severe that teeth can be lost. Both bone and tooth loss cause your mouth to collapse, which is visible as a caving in of the face. Considerable loss is more challenging to fix, leading to multiple surgeries, added expense, and more investment of your time.

To maximize your quality of life we strive to treat and save as many of your own teeth as possible, as nature intended. However, implants can be used as adjunctive treatment to restore form and function.
